Juniperus communis, or juniper, is an evergreen tree of the Cupressaceae family, native to cool, temperate regions of North America, Europe, and Asia, with notable abundance in central Texas and eastern Oregon. Its purple-blue to blackish-brown berries, actually fused seed cones, are harvested in early autumn. Documented in an Egyptian papyrus from 1500 BCE, juniper berries are rich in volatile oils, contributing to their strong, herbaceous flavor.

Juniper supports digestive health and urinary tract function due to its diuretic and antimicrobial properties.
  • Berries: Dried and are used sparingly in culinary recipes, tinctured, or added to liquors and teas, preserving essential oils when crushed just before use.
