Trigonella foenum-graecum, or fenugreek, is an annual herb of the Fabaceae family, native to the Mediterranean, Ukraine, India, and China. Growing with pale yellow flowers and clover-like, three-lobed leaves, it is cultivated widely in Morocco, Turkey, India, China, and South America. Known as "Greek hay" from its Latin name, fenugreek has been used since ancient Assyria (7th century B.C.E.) and documented in the Ebers papyri (ca. 1500 B.C.E.) for culinary and wellness purposes. Valued in Egyptian, Indian, and Middle Eastern cuisines, it was used by Greeks, Romans, and in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda to support digestion and as an emollient.

Fenugreek supports digestion, relieving occasional gas and bloating, acts as an appetite stimulant, and may support lactation in nursing mothers. Its mucilaginous properties benefit internal health, and it serves as an emollient in topical poultices.
  • Seed: With a sweet, slightly bitter, maple-like flavor, fenugreek seeds are used as a spice in curries, vegetarian dishes, and baked goods, or infused in tea blends. They support digestion and are used in Egyptian, Indian, and Middle Eastern cuisines, as well as in imitation maple syrups and liqueurs.
  • Seed Powder: Ground from seeds, the powder is added to savory and sweet dishes, tinctured, encapsulated, or used in topical applications. It offers the same digestive and lactation support as whole seeds, with versatility for precise dosing in supplements or culinary blends.
Seeds are preferred for teas and direct culinary use due to their aromatic texture, while the powder’s fine consistency suits tinctures, capsules, and uniform flavoring in recipes, both sharing identical digestive and emollient benefits.
