Inula helenium, commonly known as elecampane, is a tall perennial herb of the Asteraceae family, native to southern and eastern Europe, western Asia, and northwestern India, but now naturalized globally. Growing 6-8 feet tall, it features bright yellow, daisy-like flowers and large, aromatic roots, harvested from 2- to 3-year-old plants. Used since ancient Greece in traditional European herbalism, elecampane’s roots are valued for their beneficial properties, historically employed as a spice and in medicinal preparations.

Elecampane supports respiratory health, traditionally used to ease coughs and promote expectoration due to its soothing and mucilage properties.
  • Root: The aromatic roots are infused as tea, tinctured, added to herbal syrups, or used as a spice. Harvested from mature plants, they support respiratory wellness, aiding in clearing mucus and soothing irritation, with a robust flavor suitable for culinary and medicinal applications.
  • Root Powder: Ground from dried roots, the powder is incorporated into syrups, macerated as extracts, or encapsulated. It offers the same respiratory benefits as the whole root, with the convenience of precise dosing for supplements or blending into herbal formulations.
The root and root powder share identical respiratory-supporting properties, with the whole root preferred for teas, tinctures, and culinary uses due to its traditional preparation and flavor. The powder provides flexibility for encapsulation and consistent dosing in syrups or extracts, making it ideal for modern herbal applications.

Precautions
Persons with allergies to other members of the Asteraceae family (such as feverfew, chamomile, or Echinacea) should exercise caution as a potential allergen. Large doses may cause vomiting, diarrhea, and cramping. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.
