Angelica sinensis, commonly known as dong quai, is a small perennial herb from the Apiaceae family, native to high-altitude regions of China and Japan, where it thrives in cool, damp soils. Growing up to three feet, it produces clusters of white flowers and is extensively cultivated for its roots, harvested in autumn. Used for over two thousand years in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dong quai is often called “female ginseng” for its tonic properties and widespread use as a spice and medicinal herb.

Dong quai is a popular TCM remedy, traditionally used to support women’s health, particularly for menstrual and menopausal concerns, due to its tonic and wellness-supporting qualities.
  • Root: Harvested in autumn, dong quai root is commonly infused as tea or tinctured, often combined with other botanicals in herbal formulations. Its earthy flavor and bioactive compounds make it a staple for supporting women’s reproductive health and overall vitality.
  • Root Powder: The dried and ground root is used alone or in herbal blends, suitable for tincturing or encapsulation. It offers the same benefits as the whole root, supporting women’s health, with the convenience of a powdered form for precise dosing or incorporation into supplements.
The root and root powder share identical therapeutic properties, supporting women’s health in TCM. The whole root is preferred for teas and tinctures due to its traditional preparation, while the powder’s versatility suits encapsulation and consistent dosing in formulations.
