Syzygium aromaticum, commonly known as clove, is a small evergreen tree in the Myrtaceae family, native to the Moluccas (Spice Islands) in Indonesia. It is widely cultivated in Tanzania, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and South America, with Tanzania being the largest commercial producer. The tree has smooth gray bark, large, bright green, aromatic lanceolate leaves, and produces pink or reddish flower buds that turn dark brown when dried, known as cloves. These buds are highly aromatic and pungent, used as a culinary spice for thousands of years. Cloves are integral to Middle Eastern, North African, Chinese (in five-spice powder), and Indian cuisines (in garam masala and chai tea). They are also used in baking, mulled wine, liqueurs, and perfumes, and clove oil is employed in dentistry for its beneficial properties. In Ayurveda, known as "lavanga," and in Traditional Chinese Medicine, clove is considered a warming herb that supports digestion, lung health, and circulation, particularly in cold conditions.
Available as whole dried cloves or ground powder, cloves retain their potency when stored properly, ideal for culinary dishes, tea blends, or herbal formulations.
