Galium aparine, commonly known as cleavers or bedstraw, is an herbaceous annual in the Rubiaceae family, native to Britain and North America but found worldwide. This creeping plant features tiny hairs, clinging leaves, and sticky seeds that attach to passers-by. Related to quinine and sweet woodruff, the entire plant is harvested just before blooming in early summer for herbal use. It has a slightly bitter taste and no odor. Cleavers is used fresh in spring salads, dried for tinctures, steeped as tea, or applied topically. It can also be encapsulated or lightly sprinkled on food for its fresh flavor. Available as dried herb, cleavers retains its quality when stored properly, suitable for culinary and herbal preparations.
